(December 2010) Never Never Never eat at The Forge in the Forest in Carmel. This restaurant, The Forge in the Forest, has been around for almost 30 years. It was a good place to hang out in summer with a nice patio and a cozy retreat in the winter with fireplaces and decent food. But all that has changed and not for the better. I was there on Thanksgiving Day and was that a mistake. The restaurant had advertised a set menu of the traditional turkey and stuffing for the day when I made a reservation well in advance on Open Table.com. Upon arriving at "The Forge" and being seated then having my wine served by a waiter who had obviously been a busboy the previous day, I was told they were "out of stuffing" for the turkey dinner. A few minutes later when I had decided to order the turkey anyway I was told they were OUT OF TURKEY TOO!!! Then the waiter mumbled something about the chef having walked out that morning leaving them with no real Thanksgiving dinners and suggested I order off the regular menu. No manager come by to ask about anything during the meal. The food was mediocre and overpriced at best. The service was barely acceptable and the whole attitude of staff was "we don't care if you eat here or not". I therefore advise you all to avoid The Forge in the Forest. There are many better choices in Carmel and Monterey. Try Montrio Bistro in Monterey or St. Tropez Restaurant in Carmel. Montrio Bistro is one of the best places to eat in Monterey. The same owners also have the well established Rio Grill nearby. The decor is hip, upscale and comfortable. The staff is efficient and personable. The food is fantastic. Start with an Aviation, their signature cocktail made with Gin and essence of lavender and housemade Maraschino cherry. Then continue flying high with appetizers like risotto balls or lobster mac and cheese. all the main dishes are fine, lamb tenderloin, Chicken cooked "under a brick" Ahi tuna or duck breast you can't go wrong. Prices are high but not unexpected for the quality. Dinner for 2 will run about $100 if you do it right. Call for reservations 831-648-8880. www.montrio.com
